ux collection's maureen herben testimonial for UX strategy

“They managed to keep the live classes engaging and fun - even after a long day at work. I liked how practical this course was and that the theory was provided on a separate learning platform, so I could just read that whenever I had time and wanted to learn more. The templates we used were provided in Miro, which was also great because that way I could use them for work as well.”

    design strategy skills and ai

    Strategy is an AI-resistant skill.

Strategy skills remain a smart investment.

Current AI tools primarily automate tactical work. In design, that means tasks like generating images or building prototypes. These tasks are the first tactics to be handed off to machines.

Strategy demands a different kind of thinking, like complex reasoning and sustained focus that AI struggles to match. In the hierarchy of strategic elements, strategy sits above tactics, directing tools like AI toward meaningful outcomes.

AI is an invaluable tool that can help you with researching and communicating strategy, but it won't replace strategists.

As long as humans still make the decisions, strategy will stay in human hands.

A portrait of a man with a bald head and beard smiling, wearing a light yellow collared shirt, against a solid dark blue background.

“The UX strategy and design course was exceptionally well-structured, offering a balanced mix of workshops, video sessions, and assignments. Highlights included Jeff’s invaluable feedback and the opportunity to collaborate with fellow UX designers. The provided resources were high-quality and easy to understand. Overall, this course demystified the complex topic of strategy design, making it both approachable and actionable. It’s especially beneficial for designers working in product teams, as it helps bridge the gap between design and business strategy. Highly recommended for anyone looking to elevate their strategy skills.”

    Frequently asked questions

    • We highly recommend attending all classes since 75% of the work happens in class. You’re an adult, so your attendance and assignments are entirely up to you. Students who miss classes tend to disengage from the community and slowly disappear. We don’t want that to happen, so we ask you to attend the classes. We’ll take care of the rest!

    • If you’ve never worked in UX, this course is not for you. This course is meant to set you up for design positions where you have the agency to create a strategy. We design our courses for mid-career UX and Product Designers. We assume you know the basic UX/UI skills taught at universities and bootcamps. Learn more about the skills and processes involved in this FREE masterclass on UX Strategy.

    • For the Live version (Regular & Pro Seats), The main learning happens on Wednesday workshops during the course dates, which lasts two hours from 19:00-21:00 CET (Berlin Time). There is also a welcome call and a graduation call on the first and last date of the course that lasts one hour. To summarize, there are six workshops every Wednesday for 120 minutes and two calls on the first and last Monday of the course dates for 60 minutes.

The Self-Paced version (Essential Seat) has no course schedule, allowing you to learn at your own pace when you have time.

    • Our classes are just like an in-person design workshop. We will have group discussions, Miro activities, 1-on-1 feedback, great tunes, interactive media, energizers, and lots of laughs. We think that our live classes are better than most in-person design courses. We use real-time tools like Zoom, Miro, Slack, and Notion to make things as interactive as possible. We usually run a preview workshop for free before the course so sign up to our weekly newsletter if you want to try out a live class.

    • Strategies should never be created alone. Since your team won’t be in the course, we will create a “proto-strategy” for this course. That way, you will have an iteration under your belt and feel confident to guide your team through the process after the course.

    • Jeff Humble is both the course designer and the main instructor of Defining UX Strategy. Get a feel for his teaching style in this free class on UX Strategy

    • After this course, you will know how to design any of these strategies! We use a strategic design process that will work well for UX, design, experience, and product strategies. However, you should be aware that product and business strategies are extremely high-stakes projects and often require delicate stakeholder management. Also, product strategy is seen as the domain of product management in most companies and business strategy is the domain of the CEO. Consider purchasing a Pro Seat to get one-on-one calls with Jeff during the course. That way, you will get extra coaching to ensure your course project is a winning strategy. Learn more about the process in this webinar.

    • We’ve found that course projects work best when they’re as real as possible. So, if you don’t have a client or a company to work on a strategy for, consider making a strategy for a friend’s business or product. You might also create a strategy for a side hustle of your own. There is always at least one designer in every cohort that is in this situation, so don’t worry! Your course instructor is available by direct message to help you find a target for your strategy project.

    • First of all, we prioritize interaction over lectures. We used a variety of activities, breakout rooms, games, and tools like Miro, Butter, and some green screen magic to keep you as engaged as possible. We don’t use Zoom for class so that you can try something new. We switch up the pace every 10 minutes, so you never get bored. Zoom calls are exhausting, but our courses are not. We ask that you show up and engage in the class, and we promise you’ll have no problems paying attention. Many of our students comment that two hours of class feels like twenty minutes due to the variety of learning formats.

    • We can accommodate group seats for companies at a discount. Reach out to jeff@thefountaininstitute.com for more details.

    • We recommend that you have a fast internet connection and a computer that can handle Butter and Miro simultaneously for all classes. If you have an external monitor, it might help as well. There isn’t any pre-work. Just show up to class, and we’ll handle the rest. If you want to preview the class approach, check out the free preview here to get a taste of the course content.

    • If you get a Regular or Pro Seat, you get access to workshops during your course. We record the workshops and will upload those recordings to your course dashboard within 24 hours of the class. You will retain access to those videos and other reference material after the course. That way, you can relax and enjoy interacting with the class instead of worrying about taking notes. Every strategy course includes video lessons that will teach you how to design any type of strategy.

    • The Strategy Guidebook is basically an entire book on UX Strategy that is included in the course. It was written by Jeff Humble, the course designer, and includes over 21 articles on design strategy. The Strategy Guidebook is meant to serve as a reference for students that want to dive deeper into a topic. The Strategy Guidebook isn’t a requirement for the course. Think of it as a bonus resource for those that prefer to learn by reading.

    • Yes, you can pay via bank transfer. Fill out this form here and receive an email with payment details for a bank transfer.

    • Absolutely! You will get a credit card receipt from Stripe or Disco, our payment platforms, immediately after payment. If you require a full invoice, fill out this form to receive a complete invoice.

    • Absolutely! Once you finish the final module, you will receive a certificate of completion for this course. The certificate lists the modules you finished and thus shows the new skills that you have. Most students add the certificate to Linkedin, so that potential employers know they have strategic skills. Strategy skills are very rare among designers, so it’s important that you can show them off!
